Storyboard

26.10.15

We felt that the beginning of our music video should be really dramatic, so we are going to cut the shots 3 times in time with the beat of the music. We have practiced these shots and they have come out really well. The shots will cut between clips of the woman and clips of the party scene.

Within parts of the song we will be following Goodwin's music video theory, we will link lyrics and visuals.

These shots shown are clips that we will cut between, we wouldn't be able to show every single shot because we will have a lot of cuts throughout the music video. This storyboard just gives a overview to the types of shots we will be using throughout the video.

Club footage, test editing

23/10/15
These three shots are of our cottage from the club location. We decided to cut the shots into where they would be in the bridge section. We are really pleased with the outcome of the shots and when we have the other shots taken from our other locations.

Problems solutions

23/10/15

Similarly to the risk assessment, we have created a problems and solutions chart. This means that if any problem arises we will be ready and know what to do, to be able to solve it.

Studio application

23/10/15

For the performance element in our video, we need studio. We have asked our photography studio at school, but we still haven't got permission. Due to our deadline looming we have had to find another studio that we can film in as a back up. This studio is local and only costs £18 per hour, therefore meaning it would be £6 each.

Risk assesment

23/10/15

We have created a risk assessment for the day that we film, so we are ready for any problems that may arise.

Cambridge filming weather

31/10/15
We have decided to film next Thursday (29/10/15) because that is when all three of us and our actor/actress were available. At the moment the weather is looking good for filming, but it will be cold, so we are going to ensure we have blankets etc. to keep everyone warm.

Mock advert

23/10/15

I created a mock advert for our star image-Miles. This advert is promoting their debut album tour. For the background I used a screen shot of one of our practice clips and just de-saturated it, creating the indie/pop vintage style effect.

Model release form

These are our model release forms for filming. It has given us permission from their parents for us to film them. They are both under 18 so that is why we had to get their permission because there are mature themes that run through out the video.

Digipak task

15.10.15

'Glitterbug' By The Wombats

I chose to look at this digipak because I really like the imagery used on the cover. I really like the overlay of what looks like a city over the back of someones body. They both blend into eachother so you can see elements of both of the photos. The Wombats are a Indie/Rock band, so they are quite similar to Bastille. Their digipak cover is quite simplistic, I that is one of the main reasons why I like it. Regarding the CD, it is very simple, and I think anything busier than this may ruin the effect. I hope that when we come to looking at doing our digipak we do not try to overthink and add too many elements to it.

'Bad Blood' By Bastille

'Bad Blood' by bastille is another digipak that we have taken inspiration from. The vintage, yellow filter on the image of car lights really follows the conventions of the indie/pop genre that Bastille are in. The main singer (Dan) is running away from the camera on the front cover, possibly representing a rebellious theme relating to the name of the album: Bad Blood. The text used on the cover is very bold and eye catching, the A is individual to Bastillle because it is their logo. I hope that we will be able to follow these themes and conventions when creating our digipak because they really enhance the indie/pop genre.

Advert task

15.10.15
Bastille:
Style/Image:
This poster represents the genre of Bastille, which is Indie/Pop. I feel that the photo in the poster is supposed to look quite old with a vintage effect to it. The photo has been edited to bring out the yellows within the picture, therefore giving an aged, vintage look. The main signer of the band (Dan) isn't facing the camera and is running away from the camera. This represents the Indie/pop genre because he isn't worried about his image. The Indie/pop genre doesn't always have a really over the top star image, it is a lot more subtle.

Mise en Scene:
The Mise en Scene used in this poster is simple, yet effective. Dan is wearing a stereotypical outfit of black jeans and a light coloured jacket and is running in the middle of a road. Possibly representing to the audience a rebellious side to the band, or relating to the name of the album, 'Bad Blood'.

Layout features:
The name of the band is the largest piece of font on the page, so it catches peoples attention very easily. I feel that Bastille use throughout most of their adverts or merchandise quite a bold font. Now it is recongisable as Bastille font because they are quite famous.

Years and Years:
Style/image:
Years and Years released their first album called 'communion', to the right is their advert for their tour. Their style and genre of music is electronica, quite different to Bastille, but I really like their poster. Their poster is very different to Bastilles tour poster. It has a black background with neon colours acting as a border round the edge of the poster. The 'Y' is in the centre of the poster, it has quite a large thick outline filled with the graduated neon colours, therefore being the focal point to the poster. I think it does a really good job at catching the viewers attention. Their poster is quite different and quirky, therefore relating to the genre of music: electronica.

Mise en Scene:
I think that this poster is quite simple, but it does have some imagery in the bottom right hand corner. There are 4 boxes with facial features on, then on the other sides of the boxes there are various patterns. I think this really relates to the genre of their music because it is quite different.

Club scene photos

This photo is showing how Ella is using the lighting controls to set and make the lights flash. We found that using the softer white light worked better when it flashed because it didn't completely white out peoples faces when they were dancing.
This is a close up of the lighting controls.

Ella took this photo whilst she had set the correct lighting. It is simply showing how we did our first shot; the time lapse of the homeless girl. Myself and Esther were filming and we were telling our actors/actresses where to stand to create a really busy club scene.

Shot list

30.09.15

Throughout our music video, we will incorporate a range of shots that relate to and apply to the visuals and beat of the music.
Shots:
  • Close ups-eg. of the girls face or in the bedroom scene at the beginning to the song.
  • Mid shots-eg. in the dance scene when we take a shots of the crowds, so we will not get their heads in shot so it tells the audience that they are not of that importance.
  • Longs shots-Eg. when the girl is sitting on her own in the streets, will really help show her vulnerability.
  • Low angle shots-Eg. These will be used when the client is with the homeless girl, it will help show authority and power.

Test shots taken on location

Whilst taking our location shots we decided to take some test shots that we could possibly use in our final music video. We edited them in three different ways to see what works best. The first is a normal colour shot with slight pulled focus on it, the second is the same but with a black and white filter on it and the last shot is a time lapse with a black and white filter over the top.

Actress/Actor

 11.10.15

This is Honor, she will be playing the homeless woman in our music video.

This is Miles, he will be the main singer to the band/star image in our video.

Recce/Location Shots

11.10.15
We visited Cambridge to find some backstreets that we would be able to film in. We felt that we should be filming the homeless girl in a quiet, rustic area of Cambridge, so we explored around a shopping centre. We found a lot quiet streets but also found a run down, rusty bench. After finding this we are planning on filming the girl on the bench because it would really emphasise her vulnerability  because there isn't really anything else around the bench apart from the back of a couple of buildings.

Survey Monkey results

8.10.15

Our survey monkey results allowed us to gather information from a wide range of people. We shared the link to the survey on social media (Facebook) to allow us the get a wide variety of people answering the questions. We felt that the most helpful bit of information that we got from doing this survey was that most people felt that a music video should have both narrative and performance in it. This has heavily influenced our music video because I think we will split performance and narrative 50/50.

Pitch (Draft write up)

6.10.15

1. (Ella) Introduce our chosen track:-'What would you do' by Bastille.

2. (Esther) Style of music video:

  • Indie/Pop genre.
  • The style of the video will be an insiders look on the girls life, so the camera shots will be quite soft but will look as if they follow her around.
  • Quite a slow moving, sad music video. We don't want it to be very explicit even with the mature themes.
3. (Me) Inspirations/Inter textual references:
  • 'The A Team' by Ed Sheeran. This video has inspired us within cinematography and the themes shown in the video. We are planning on having a black and white filter over the shots of the girl in the streets because it makes her seem more vulnerable.
  • 'Greek Tragedy' by The Wombats. At the beginning of the music video it cuts to the beat and rhythm of the music. It is very similar to how we are planning on cutting our clips at the beginning of the music video, it creates a good, dramatic start to the music video.
  • 'Swimming pools' by Kendrick Lamar. We used this video when we were doing our test shots. It gave us inspiration for the party scene because of the slo-mo shots and the lighting.
4. (Ella) Target Audience:
  • Our target audience is young adults/teens. The themes in the video are quite mature, so I think that our target audience can't be too young because it would be inappropriate for younger children.
5. (Esther) Star Image:
  • The Star image in our music video will be the male actor. He will be dressed in a typical boy band costume (white t-shirt, jeans, boots and a leather jacket).
6. (Anna) Narrative:
  • The narrative element to the video is about a girl who is homeless and has a son that she needs to care for, she has to resort to prostitution to be able to get money for him. The main singer will be her support system and will try to get her onto the right track.
7. (Ella) Representations:
  • The representations in this video will relate to life on the streets and how it effects her.

"he issued a writ for breach of copyright"

    protected by copyright.
"permission to reproduce photographs and other copyright material"
verb
  1. 1.
    secure copyright for (material).
"copyrighted music downloaded illegally from the Internet

I got this information from typing in 'Copyright definition' into google. So copyright is a protection that people can put onto specific products so other people cannot copy their work. It is mainly used for musical and artistic pieces of work. We know as a group that Bastille is a very famous band, so we need to make sure that we do not breach any copyright laws. Bastille are owned by Virgin and Capitol records. We have sent an email to Virgin Records asking for permission of the song and we are currently awaiting a reply.

Time Lapse Practice

4.10.15
We decided as a group that we would need to test out the time lapse shot(s) that will be used in the clubbing scene. We filmed for around 8 minutes then used Final Cut Express to speed up the footage. We are very pleased with how it turned out because as long as the girl doesn't move at all it will be really effective. When we film for the video there will be a lot more people dancing around the girl, but I think it was good to see how it worked. I also like how the movement seems to be slightly transparent, it looks like another layer on top of the shot of the girl standing in the middle. I think this looks really good and hopefully we can do this again as well as we have done in the music video.
